A glimpse of Islamic Civic Society of America Activities from September-December 2010, in addition to daily a regular scheduled programs such full & part time schools, weekly Halaqas, regular leadership trainings and committee meetings.

September 2010

  • Sept. 6. The 27th of Ramadan, Night of Reflection.  The attendees of the event enjoyed both the structure and numerous exchanges of ideas especially in the debate, which questioned the youth on the progress, and success of the East African Immigrant Community in Minnesota in the next 20 years. This event concluded with an astonishing recitation of Quran where youth, boys and girls took on head in head on a competition for who comprehend more of the memorization. It was indeed an event, which its spirit followed.
  • Sept. 10th. “1st Islamic Eid Carnival” following the last day of Ramadan, Water slide, bungee jumps, horse rides, OH MY, ICSA held its annual Eid Celebration with over 500 members of the community attending and setting a stone for a new trend of Eid. The evenT was held at Huset Park in Columbia Heights, Minnesota, was a huge success and left left many kids cheering as they drove away.
  • Sept. 13th. The festivities concluded with the annual Eid celebration in collaborative ICSA Youth Council and Salahudin Student Union for Salahudin Weekend Islamic School.

October 2010

  • Oct. 17th. It was a new calendar year and one of the programs starting up again including the Interfaith Youth Leadership Coalition, where groups of youth from different faiths came together to host the annual “Interfaith Youth Day of Serve” a informational meeting was held at the center mid-September in order to update and bring together the youth participants of this year.
  • On Friday October 17th, over a dozen high school leaders gathered together for a formal meeting on the 2010-2011 Interactive Academic Contests. During this time, they learned about the program, read over the rules, and signed their schools up for what will be a great year.

November 2010

  • Nov. 13th. Salahudin School celebrated Eid Al- Adha. ICSAYS organized the event. We had a youth speker that talked about Eid Al- Adha and how is it important. Educational games for students and many more.
  • Nov. 26th. The 1st Round of 3rd Annual Interactive Academic Contests Ended Successfully. More than 200 hundred youth came and participated a joyful event. Nine high schools participated in this first round. Inspirational speeches were given and Sh. Abdirahman Sharif gave thoughtful insights to the students, parents, teachers and other guests who came. Congratulations and good job to all of you and specially those who won this first round, but, do not let this first wining to deceive you because the second round is just around the corner, so keep the momentum.
    First group
    were South West, South and Hopkins. South West got first whereas South and Hopkins got same scores.
    Second group
    were Higher Ground Academy, Washburn and Roosevelt.  Higher Ground Academy got first, Washburn got second while Roosevelt got third place.
    Third group
    were Ubah Medical Academy, Opportunity (VOA), Lincoln International. Ubah Medical Academy got first, Opportunity (VOA) got second while Lincoln International got third place.

December 2010

  • Dec. 1st. Successful Night for our Communities: Islamic Civic Society of America and the Islamic League of Somali Scholars in America (ILSSA) hosted an open house for Muslims and mainstream communities on December 1st 2010.  In an attempt to educate the greater community about Islam, Somali culture and the history of west bank community. Scholars and leaders who spoke at the event reiterated the need of coexistence as it is the only viable option for our communities.The event featured several speakers including Sharif Mohamed, Imam of Dar Al-Hijrah Mosque and president of ILSSA,   Abdiwahid Sh. Osman, Abdislaam Adam, Hussein Samatar, Tim Mungoven,  Abdikadir Ibrahim, Fartun Ahmed and Abdirahman Hassan.

    The turnout was very impressive so was the Somali cuisine. The event also attracted the local and national media. Several local radios, star tribune and associated press wired out prior while CNN, channels 4, and 9, MPR, Somali MaiTV, mogadishutimes.com and Dar Al-Hijrah Times were present and covered the event

  • Dec. 23-24th.  Historic Dates for Minnesota Communities: It was a night and morning of memory for so many of us, here in the Twin Cities. On Thursday night, December 23, 2010, Prof. Tariq Ramadan gave a historic speech to a wide, diverse, overcrowded audience from aspects of religion, social, diversity, civilization, history, future… Inspiring Universal Message for everyone, no matter which class of education, economy, race or religion one belongs to. It was a motivation, encouragement and inspiration for everyone.  On the very morning of Friday, 24th of December, leaders and educators had a breakfast of its kind with the Professor, what an intellectual dialogue, questions and answers afterwards.
  • Dec 26th. Salahudin School held a wonderful competition from spelling to reading, writing, general education to Quran to inspire and to encourage children ages 5-10 years old.
  • Dec. 27-31st.  Winter Courses on Islamic Leadership. This routine programs for youth every break to help youth to help themselves and others. Everything starts with basics, so sometimes we want our youth to do so much but as individuals, they have to be prepared so that they can meet our expectations.   When they are developed as good individuals they will develop good families and from these family’s good community will be developed and from these communities, good society will be established.  Varies presentations on Islamic leadership and public speaking were given by br. Abdikadir Ibrahim, br. Abdisalam Adam & sis. Fedwa Wazwaz.
  • Dec. 31st.  Muslim Women & Islamic Institutions, an event only for sisters.  Sh. Ahmed Tajir & Sh. Abdirahman Sharif expounded the the rights, responsibilities for women on Islamic perspective, and a lot of  myths & misconceptions on women & Islam were pointed out were some people with their ignorance and narrow minded on Islam use to diminish the rights that Islam gives women. The scholars encouraged women to be top on their Islam, family, work and services. Women have been for runners of this umma (Muslim community) since its inception in all aspects in the past why not now.
