ICSA Annual Recognition of Our Community Development

In any progressive community, members of that community must acknowledge and recognize the heroes who are in the frontline to make that progress happen.  Early 1993, the Somali community started to come to Minnesota to flee the civil war in their homeland.  Minnesota now boasts the largest Somali Diaspora in the United States. Many families came from various parts of the world to have better opportunities for their children.  These opportunities include education, employment, business, and non-profit institutions. Our state is known for its progressive social justice and innovative ideas. For example, the first charter school started in St. Paul and we have recently elected Congressman Keith Ellison as the first Muslim to the United States Congress.

About 10,000 Somali students are in Minnesota school systems in K-12. In addition, a good number of Somali students are in higher education with increasing number of graduates every year. Weekend Islamic schools are advancing Islamic education for our children to become balanced Muslims. Also, the number of community owned business and institutions have been increasing steadily. There are about four Somali malls and over a hundred for-profit and non-profit organizations.

To recognize our community’s accomplishments, the Islamic Civic Society of America (ICSA), will hold its annual recognition for graduates, business leaders, and organizations on June 25, 2011.

The event features several keynote speakers including Dr. Alawi Sharif Ali Adam, a distinguished scholar of Arabic and Somali Studies from Columbus, OH, Sh. Abdirahman Sharif, as well as other imams, educators, activists, youth, and community leaders.

The event features several important programs:

  • Graduates of 2011 from high schools, colleges and Universities
  • Inspirational messages from our scholars
  • Honoring individuals, organizations, and business leaders who contributed significantly to our community
  • Appreciating ICSA volunteers
  • Awarding trophies to winners of interactive High School Competition
  • Celebrating our own pre-school (Al-Hikma) achievement & graduation
  • Sharing youth talent (play, poems, comedy, speeches)
    Free admission &  daycare

We are expecting a large community turn out. Therefore, on behalf of ICSA and Dar Al-Hijrah administration we cordially invite you to participate with us in this community event.

Date: Saturday, June 25, 2011, 5:00 PM – 8:30 PM

Location: Masjid Dar Al-Hijrah 504 Cedar Avenue South Minneapolis, MN 55454

May Allah, Subhanahu wa Ta’ala reward you for your support in the service of Islam and Muslims & society in general.

Wassalamu alaikum,

Br. Abdikadir Ibrahim,
Executive Director
