Sharif Abdirahman’s Lecture on Muslim Youth & Next Ten Years
Fartun Abukar & Kalthum Abdullah
Do you have plans for the next decade? Do you want to be successful in the next 10 years? How would you see yourself ten years from now? Do you know the first month of 2010 is already over? Are you still following your goals or you gave up?
No do not give up we can help you stay on schedule, and fulfill your goals, with the help of Allah.
Well, remember, the next ten years is based on how we act, and it depends on the kinds of goals we set for ourselves. Before we set goals we have to remember that Islam is where you will find all of your goals, here in this life and after life as well. It is the religion that sets everything straight, nothing is hidden, no surprises and its very simple if you take it the way it was revealed you are good to go.
Qur’an says “And indeed, we have made the Qur’an easy to understand and remember; is there any that will remember (or receive admonition)”? 54:32.
In order to be successful in the next ten years, you need to set some goals and try to stay on truck to see if you are following those goals or not, here are some suggestions:
A. Be a good human being who helps him or herself and community benefits from him/herself
B. Be a patient person because whatever we do can be difficult and if we are not patient we will not be able to reach our goals.
C. Be humble and no bad attitude
D. Keep promises, do not be the kind of person who promise and breaks it, because breaking the promise is a sign of hypocrisy. This is not a good sign.
E. Always work on helping others and be beneficial to the people. Help your community and have good connection with your community.
F. Be a caring person.
G. Be a sharing person.
H. Be truthfulness
I. Have confidence on yourself.
J. Have high self esteem -if you have high hope anything would be possible. Believe in yourself that you can reach these goals; work hard for it because nothing comes without working hard. And the saying goes “Whoever wants to reach high levels he/she has to stay late at night” meaning you have to make some accomplishments. As we all know nothing will come to you unless you look for it, we cannot just wish for something and never look for it. In addition, you need to make and have connection with your community and Islamic organizations, example going to mosque, learning the Quran and the religion by attending the halaqas (study circles), participating events that are taking place will increase your connection with your community and knowledge at the same time.
K. Choose and have good friends- remember if you do not make connection with good people you will end up with bad people who lead in a situation that you do not want be.
L. Know your rights and responsibilities- if you do not know your rights and responsibilities you will not know what is right and wrong.
M. Know that you are representing Islam and Muslims- remember, we represent Islam, and we should not send bad image to the world about Islam.
N. Be a good Muslim and citizen at the same time- know that you can be a good Muslim and civil citizen because this two are not contraindicating each other. You can be an American citizen who can play his or her role, take his or her part of the society and still be a good Muslim. These two can go together. Be a good citizen and contribute to the country what you can and at the same time hold on your religion and your identity.
O. knows that education is a key to success-educate yourself both academically and spiritually. On January 27th the president of United States gave State on the Union speech and he said “Still, in this economy, a high school diploma no longer guarantees a good job” Barack Obama. Now it is clear if you want to help the needy you need to have income, and if you do not have education no one is going to hire you. Knowledge protects you from bad stuff.
I guess it is the time to make changes and make a difference, let’s make the next decade a productive decade and even better than the past decade. We are concluding with a saying of the Prophet (PBUH) and we hope it will be helpful to you. Since we are setting goals, we should keep this in mind and use it as an inspiration “Appreciate five things before five others: your youth before your old age, your health before your illness, your wealth before your poverty, your spare time before your hard work and your life before your death.” we hope this benefits you. May God forgive us and our parents and the rest of the Muslim ummah.
JazakaAllahu kheyran and May God bless you our Sheikh, indeed many youth benefit from your lectures as always. We are ever grateful to you.
